Jump Studios, NVIDIA Quadro, PNY, and Adobe CC Help Predict the Future of NASCAR's Top Drivers

ESPN turned to Jump Studios to create a riveting, entertainment-driven "Last Chance" teaser
To intensify interest for the NASCAR Sprint Series Chase to the Cup and to encourage viewers to feel a connection with the top 12 drivers, ESPN turned to the multiple Emmy(r) Award-winning Jump Studios to create a riveting, entertainment-driven "Last Chance" teaser.   With its Tarot card reader foretelling the future, the cinematically styled ESPN teaser creates an air of mystery and intrigue surrounding these popular NASCAR personalities. Who would win? How will the story end? Is the answer in the cards?

Powering the Creative Process

Thanks to NVIDIA(r) Quadro(r) GPUs, PNY and the Adobe(r) Creative Cloud(tm) platform, Canadian-based Jump Studios was able to conceptualize, shoot, edit, design, and finalize the teaser in only two weeks-even responding to a last-minute change from ESPN to cut 15 seconds from the 11/2-minute piece just one day before the finished teaser was due to delivery to ESPN.

"The NVIDIA Quadro, CUDA technology, and Adobe Creative Cloud work together seamlessly and enable digital artists like us to work at the speed of thought," said Jeff August, Partner and Creative Director for Jump Studios.

Jump built a Gothic-themed set and shot scenes using two digital cameras-a Canon C500 and a Sony FS-700-and three formats, including high-speed RED. They created the TV teaser using Adobe After Effects CC and Photoshop CC; edited in Adobe Premiere CC; used Adobe SpeedGrade CC for the color work and finishing; and employed LookLabs' groundbreaking SpeedLooks pre-set digital video 'looks' plug-ins to get consistent final film-grade quality, regardless of what cameras or formats were used for each scene.

Jump studios worked directly with PNY to source NVIDIA Quadro K5000 CUDA-enabled graphics cards to drive all the Adobe Creative Cloud software tools.

"The tools supported our workflow and let us quickly make that rather extensive last-minute change in our 'Last Chance' teaser without sacrificing quality or creative concept," said August. "By speeding up the workflow, the combination of NVIDIA and Adobe tools gives us the luxury of more time for editing, color correction, and other creative aspects."

Doing More for Less

PNY provided pre-and post-sales assistance allowing Jump Studios to keep its technology up-to-date easily, without taking time and attention away from the creative work.

"With these technologies, we can get the world's best performance for not much money," said Craig Van Horne, Founder and Producer/Senior Editor of Scorched Ice Digital, a boutique digital cinema and video company, also based in Canada, that Jump Studios used for post-production and technology support services. "What we can do today with NVIDIA Quadro-powered Adobe tools in real time far exceeds what was possible just five years ago on high-end studio systems."

Two Weeks from Concept to Airing

"The Quadro K5000 GPUs with SDI provides a level of immediacy and performance that's not available anyplace else.  We never suffer with any latency or lag time issues because of Quadro's fast frame buffering capabilities," said Van Horne.

Jump did all the scaling for the 'Last Chance' project in high resolution on the Quadro GPU so they didn't have to render. This saved a couple of hours on the project, which was crucial with the tight deadline and late-breaking change.

"From a business standpoint, technology reliability is everything. We can't afford a moment of downtime, especially with a big deadline looming," said Brian Vos, Partner and General Manager of Jump Studios. "NVIDIA's Quadro products have always worked flawlessly, and it's nice to know that whether it is pre-sales guidance or post-sales support, PNY has our back."
